Registrars

Set up in 1938, the post of Registrar was initially designed to ensure every manager understood the importance of the Partnership’s systems and that all the paperwork relating to the democratic side of the business was carried out uniformly and to a high standard.

Spedan then recruited a number of well-educated, usually unmarried women to take these roles. They were autonomous to branch management reporting directly to the Chief Registrar enabling them to act independently of the management team and offering an advisory role on matters relating to staffing and the operation of local democracy. They were moved around the branches at regular intervals to ensure their relationship with heads of branches remained independent.
