Winter Hill

In 1938 Spedan Lewis bought almost 200 acres of land at Winter Hill, Cookham, near the Odney Club. He intended to turn it into a golf course but his plans were put on hold during the War as it was required as agricultural land. It was not until 1971 that the plan was reconsidered and the decision taken to create a course which would be subsidised for Partners but also allow external members on a commercial basis.

Designed by leading experts including Charles Lawrie, Donald Steel and James Arthur it included an underground irrigation system and trees from the Longstock Park Nursery. It was finally ready for play in May 1976 and at 6,432 yards was the 5th longest course in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
