Florence Lorimer

Spedan Lewis recruited a variety of people to join the business in the interwar period. Many of these were women, some of whom had no retail experience. Florence Lorimer was one of these.

A graduate of Somerville College, where she knew Beatrice Lewis, Florence worked at the British Museum before being headhunted by Spedan to undertake a buying trip to the Middle East to purchase carpets and other goods from the region around Peshawar, Madras and the Punjab. She was paid £300 and given £5000 to spend on items which would be sold in Peter Jones. She left England in July 1925 and returned in April the following year. The merchandise she purchased was then sold in the shop and to museums and other interested collectors.

Miss Lorimer was given the title Buyer of Foreign Carpets but married in 1928 and left the Partnership in 1932.
