Stanley Spencer

A regular visitor to the Odney Club, artist and local resident Stanley Spencer was often seen in the Club with his artist’s materials in a pram which he wheeled around the village. On one of the early weekends held at the Club by the Sabeema Sketching Club, Spencer joined the members for dinner and spent the evening talking with them.

Several of his paintings contain scenes from the Club including “Landscape with Magnolia. Odney Club 1938” which is held at the National Gallery of Canada and “Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta: Conversation between Punts” which can be seen at the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham village.
